Artificial intelligence is infiltrating every aspect of our daily lives, including the job market. Perhaps ironically, these aren't skills humans normally learn in college either.

AI isn't great at soft skills and college doesn't focus on it either

While AI has revolutionized many aspects of work, certain skills remain uniquely human. Leadership, communication, and teamwork are among the qualities that AI struggles to replicate, highlighting their enduring importance in the professional realm.

Unlike technical skills, which can be learned through formal education or training, soft skills require time and experience to develop fully. As such, they are highly valued by employers and are a key focus of professional development efforts.

Skill of the moment: adaptability

In an era defined by rapid change and uncertainty, adaptability has emerged as a critical skill for success. LinkedIn's analysis identified adaptability as the top "skill of the moment," reflecting its increasing significance in today's dynamic work environment. Over the past few years, individuals across various industries have had to pivot quickly, embracing new technologies, workflows, and challenges to remain relevant and effective in their roles.

Especially during the pandemic, survival both on the job and off was achieved through agile workers who were able to adapt to constantly changing conditions. Whether navigating remote work, industry disruptions, or economic fluctuations, those who demonstrate adaptability are better positioned to thrive amid uncertainty.

To capture this, LinkedIn measured the demand for a skill by the share of how many of the platform’s recently hired members and users who had recently received recruiter InMail possessed the skill and whether the skill was listed in paid job listings posted in May through October of last year. The “skill of the moment” was measured by the difference in the demand for a given skill in those six months compared to the same six months in 2022.
